It's the Little Things

It’s Monday. That in itself is already making today a drag—cue the endless snapchats from my friends in the sad puppy dog filter complaining about how bad their day is about to be*. The commute is subpar, watching lights flicker faster than your pre-caffineated brain can process as everyone speeds off to their respective 9 to 5s, and you begin to question everything in your existence--wishing only for your down-feathered pillows, nonstop reminding yourself that you can do it, its going to be ok.

And it is. Somehow, you always make it. You champion, you.

—I caught up with a friend this weekend who tried to tell to me that actual pure bliss, knock you off your feet and slap you in the face happiness wasn’t attainable. How sad a thought that everything you are working for would never pay off in the end and horrifyingly may not even be worth it. That a .4 overall on the 1 to 10 happiness scale but might be all we know is possible in our current state of affairs.

A ruining subject as is, I can never loose sight that this is all temporary––thank God, time to latch onto the little things. Never forget the taste of that good meal, or when you actually finished your coffee before it got lukewarm. Enjoy hopping into bed after a long day, a solo surf sesh or actually having time to kick back and enjoy a few pages of a great novel or a new beer. You have to look forward to things like the weekend trips to your favorite beach town (seen below), reuniting with old friends, dancing around at dusk in all white, not throwing up after a banger of a night, a nice long stretch in the morning or eating too many hot dogs in one sitting as the new self proclaimed Joe Chestnut Jr. Wave to that stranger on the street or give the homeless man a slurpee, take a picture of the sunset over that old rusty city, buy that $102 jacket and live life on the edge with $67 left in your bank account until the glorified pay day next Friday, eat lots of onions and never shortchange yourself on bottomless laughter.

The small seemingly insignificant joys are what’s going to get you through this minimally exciting lull you are currently enduring. For now anyway––what’s the harm in creeping up that .4 just a tad?

While your waiting on this 10/10 blissful happiness, living for something or whatever the hell is next, why not just also live in the meantime. Life’s too short to waste a day anyway. “Enjoy the little things, because it’s all we’ve got.”
